Petronas says it owns petroleum resources in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) says it has the exclusive ownership of the petroleum resources in Malaysia, including those in Sarawak.

This is in response to the press statement made by the office of the Chief Minister of Sarawak on July 1 on the government’s intent to exercise its power under relevant state laws relating to oil and gas activities in the state.

“Petronas maintains that it has exclusive ownership of the petroleum resources in Malaysia and is the sole regulator of the upstream sector in the country,” the national oil and gas company said in a statement.

Moving forward, Petronas said it will closely monitor the situation, including seeking views and guidance from the government, being the sole shareholder of Petronas, in carrying out its duties.
