Proposals for 3rd national car trickling in

SHAH ALAM: The Government has received two proposals on developing the third national car and will evaluate all submitted proposals to see if they meet the government's requirements before formulating incentives and so on.

"So far, We have received two (proposal papers) but I think, it is better if we wait until the 15th October deadline," Malaysian Automotive Institute (MAI) chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Madani Sahari told reporters at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Proton Holdings Bhd and MAI in Shah Alam today.

Also present were Proton CEO Dr Li Chunrong, Proton deputy CEO Datuk Mohd Radzaif Mohamed and MITI deputy secretary-general (Industry) Datin K Talagavathi.

Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) recently invited automotive parts manufacturers to submit proposals to the government on the third national car project, with 15th October 2018 as the deadline.

It has been reported that the third national car rollout is slated for 2020 and the first prototype ready by next year.

Madani said MAI and Proton's collaboration will optimise resources in the development of Proton car spare parts to that of global standards.

He also said the joint venture would maximise usage of advanced design, digital process simulation and better verification technology.

"We've discussed with PROTON on improving suppliers' capabilities. Following the launch of the X70, we find there are some gaps that need to be addressed.

"The government has allocated RM4 million to MAI and Proton to help upskill suppliers' capability," he said.
