DRB-HICOM in talks to assemble two more car brands here

MELAKA: DRB-HICOM Bhd is in talks with two international car brands for its subsidiary Hicom Automotive Manufacturers (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd to assemble their vehicles in Malaysia, group managing director Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar said.

Syed Faisal did not name the brands and stressed that it was not Audi.

“We are trying to expand this business (automobiles production and assembly) because it is a good business and we believe Hicom Automotive is quite good at it.

“However, I cannot tell you which brands yet. And it is not Audi,” he told reporters during a briefing at DRB-HICOM Media Escapade 2019 here today.

Hicom Automotive currently assembles Volkswagen’s Tiguan, Passat, Vento, Jetta and Polo Hatchback, and Mercedes Benz’s S-Class, E-Class, GLC and C-Class.

It is the first company outside of Germany that does the assembly for Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class.

DRB-HICOM, via its subsidiary Euromobil Sdn Bhd, is a distributor of Audi in Malaysia.

Besides Euromobil, the group’s distribution arm includes Automotive Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd for Isuzu, EON Auto Mart Sdn Bhd for Mitsubishi and Hicom Auto Sdn Bhd for Volkswagen.

The group is also the exclusive distributor of Jeep and Tata brands in Malaysia.
