MBAM urges govt to embrace digitalisation

KUALA LUMPUR: Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM) hopes government, through Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), will have more comprehensive road map on the implementation of digitisation for construction industry.

MBAM president Foo Chek Lee said adopting digital technologies for various construction process will largely reduce uncertainty and promote quality, safety and timely delivery of completed construction products.

"I would say that all of us here has a role to play.

Given the diversity with MBAM membership and experiences, I hope that all MBAM members will actively take part in driving the improvement of Malaysia's construction industry through digitisation.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to urge government, through CIDB, to implement digitisation for construction industry that covers all aspects of promotion, human capital, legislation, hardware and more,” Lee said during his speech at MBAM building and construction conference 2019 here today.

Officiating the launch ceremony, CIDB chairman Tan Sri Dr Ir Ahmad Tajuddin Ali representing the Works Minister Baru Bian, commended the organiser for breathing life to the theme ‘Improving Competitiveness through Digitalisation’ as the core message.

“The concept is in line with the aspiration of the Ministry to move towards digitising the construction industry, focusing on upgrading and optimising productivity through technology advancement, digitalisation and innovation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lee added the construction industry is yet to fully embrace the use of digitalisation compared to other industry, and known for being slow in adopting technology changes.

He said industry players in the construction industry should change from just being aware and partially adopting digitalisation, to fully implementing it in all of its activities.

“The use of digital technologies has only become a common idea among construction industry players, because of the attention garnered over time by building information modelling (BIM).

"Therefore, if construction services are to be delivered with less effort and higher accuracy, then digitalisation in the construction industry must be changed from idea to becoming a norm,” Lee said.

The conference features eight paper presentations and a forum session by local and international speakers on topics relating to digitalisation in the construction industry.

Also launched this morning was the Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) Training, a collaboration between MBAM and International Powered Access Federation (IPAF).

This collaboration produced a MEWP Guideline and Training which are in accordance with international standard and participants will get the MEWP Certificate for Manager from IPAF UK upon passing the assessment.
