HSS Engineers secures RM71.3 million contract

KUALA LUMPUR: HSS Engineers Bhd’s unit HSS Integrated Sdn Bhd (HSSI) has bagged a RM71.3 million contract from Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA).

In an exchange filing today, the engineering and project management consultant received a letter of award to provide detailed design and construction supervision services for the first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in Johor.

The BRT transport system would consist of three high-capacity lanes and the construction of a dedicated busway.

The works will commence in the fourth quarter of 2019, and are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2023 followed by a Defect Liability period of 24 months which ends in the first quarter of 2025, the filing said.

The project is anticipated to contribute positively to the group’s performance for the financial years ending 31 December 2019 till 2025.

Executive vice chairman Tan Sri Kuna Sittampalam said the group’s strength in the public transport sector will help to contribute to this key project which is integral towards the infrastructure development of one of Malaysia’s major states, Johor.

“The state’s and nation‘s first large scale BRT project is essential to support the efficient transportation of larger populations, especially within a city centre, in line with the modal shift from private vehicles to public model leading towards sustainable developments from the reduced carbon footprint,” Kuna said.

Further, he said apart from solving the perennial ‘last mile’ problem in public transportation, this IRDA BRT project would enhance the development and viability of the Malaysia-Singapore RTS project, in particular, the modal shift.

"Despite the challenging environment in the Malaysia’s infrastructure space, HEB Group continues to secure nation-building projects, which reflects the confidence in our abilities, as well as our vast experience in providing engineering services for public transportation projects.

"We intend to maintain this momentum going forward, and continue to play our part in infrastructure projects in tandem with the development of our nation,”he added.

The first phase of the BRT line consists of three lines.

In totality, the project covers 51km through the state of Johor, covering key districts in the state such as Iskandar Malaysia and Johor Bahru.

It is envisaged that the BRT’s efficient connectivity would boost commercial activity and drive urban development.

This project win brings the Group’s total gross contracts secured for the year to RM210 million, the filing added.
