TNB partners with MBS to reduce carbon footprint

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), through its renewable energy retail arm GSPARX Sdn Bhd (GSPARX), has inked an agreement with Seremban City Council (MBS) to install solar panels on the rooftop of MBS office.

In a statement, TNB said throughout the 21-year contract of the Supply Agreement of Renewable Energy (SARE) signed yesterday, MBS was expected to save up to RM3.2 million in electricity bills.

The solar panel installation, with a capacity of 720 kilowatt peak (kWp) is expected to be completed in April 2021.

The project, expected to generate 919,800 kWh of green energy in the first year, will be able to offset carbon emission from the burning of 385 metric tons of coal per year.

This was equivalent to carbon dioxide absorption by 343.6 hectares of forest per year, TNB said.

The agreement was signed by MBS mayor Datuk Zazali Salehudin and GSPARX managing director Elmi Fairul Mashuri in Seremban.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Negri Sembilan chief minister Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.

MBS is the third local authority to sign the agreement with TNB after Johor Bahru City Council and Seberang Perai City Council that have tapped into GSPARX's expertise in rooftop solar panel installation and operation.

Through GSPARX, TNB has formed partnerships with entities like city councils and corporations to enable more electricity consumers to be prosumers.

The most recent partnership with a corporation was on September 24 when Malaysia Airlines Bhd inked an agreement with GSPARX for the installation of solar panel with a capacity of 2.210 MWp on its four buildings at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

TNB said to date, under the photovoltaic solar panels scheme, Net Energy Metering and self-consumption or SELCO which have been implemented by the government, about 310 customers had inked agreements with GSPARX through SARE and direct purchase to generate about 54MWp of green energy.
