iQIYI to expand regional footprint, local contents

KUALA LUMPUR: Streaming platform iQIYI is expanding its footprint in Southeast Asia and plans to release over 12 Malay-language local originals in the coming year.

iQIYI president of movie and overseas business group Yang Xianghua said the platform has achieved invaluable success after three-year exploration and testing in the overseas market.

"We've verified the popularity and influence of iQIYI original productions outside of China, as well as how China's business model can be adopted for international markets.

"We also anticipate an annual income growth and profit for our overseas business in 2023," he added.

iQIYI said in a statement the streaming platform will continue to work with creators in Malaysia such as MIG Productions and Infinitus, among others to bring more Malaysian content to the global audience.

iQIYI Malaysia head of original content Zebedee De Costa said the platform is establishing a unique presence as it aims not only to complement existing content, including popular genres like young adult and family themes, but also to introduce genre-defying and daring storylines, outlining its distinctive plans for the Malaysian market.

The platform also launched "iQIYI International"', www.iq.com and international apps as a service to tailor to global viewers with Asian TV and films.
