Volkswagen Malaysia recalls models produced between 2010 and 2014

KUALA LUMPUR: Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has recalled models produced between 2010 and 2014.

A total of 6,671 vehicles had been identified to undergo inspection under the recall, VPCM said in a statement today.

The affected models were the sixth generation Golf GTI, Eos, Passat CC, Polo, Beetle and Vento, which are equipped with a specific driver front airbag gas generator housing.

"The concern with the front driver airbag housing generator is caused by deterioration of the generator's propellant due to high air humidity and temperature fluctuations over a long period of time.

"This could lead to potential injury on the driver and passenger," it noted.

VPCM added that it took the necessary steps with its dealer partners to ensure parts availability and that the recall is conducted smoothly and efficiently, and the nationwide recall will be carried out in phases to manage the number of cases.

All notifications to identified owners, based on the Volkswagen database will be conducted by email and WhatsApp.

VPCM said customers who purchased the vehicle from a previous owner or a used car dealership are advised to urgently contact the nearest Volkswagen authorised dealer for verification.

"Should parts replacement be required in the event of parts replacement, all labour and replacement parts for this service will be at no cost to owners," the company added.

The recall comes on the heels of the Daihatsu safety testing irregularities issue last week.

The Japanese carmaker had suspended shipments of all vehicles it developed that are currently being produced in Japan as well as overseas markets.

The issue arose after a safety investigation carried out by an independent panel found issues involving 64 models, including a number sold under the Toyota brand.

That decision to halt all shipments was also carried out in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Over the weekend, it was reported vehicle shipments had resumed in Indonesia after the company said Indonesian authorities confirmed the safety of the cars and greenlit resumption of shipments.

There is an update about Malaysia, with Reuters having reported Daihatsu as saying on that production of Perodua vehicles had resumed after getting regulatory clearance.

The statement from Perodua last week said that it was doing a detailed assessment and discussing with authorities to resolve the matter.
