Bursa Malaysia pares losses at closing

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia reduced its losses as some buying activities emerged towards the end of the trading session.

At 5pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) declined 1.51 points to 1,547.60, compared to Friday's closing of 1,549.11.

In the broader market, there were 629 losers, 443 gainers, and 443 stocks maintaining their previous levels.

Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said major regional indices saw a general downward trend due to profit-taking in the technology sector following substantial gains from the previous week.

"Investors are anticipating a series of important economic reports this week, particularly related to US inflation and interest rates.

"This has, in turn, kept risk appetite largely muted," said Thong.

Thong expressed confidence in the Malaysian equities market, anticipating a positive outlook supported by robust corporate earnings, attractive valuations, and significant backing from foreign investors.

"On the other hand, our advice to investors is to exercise caution in the current environment, taking into account external factors such as increasing market risks and elevated volatility in global markets.

"We anticipate the FBM KLCI to trend within the range of 1,540-1,570 for the week," he added.
