AirAsia X is exploring new medium- to long-haul destinations in Europe, Africa, the United States

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia X Bhd (AAX) is actively exploring multiple new medium- to long-haul destinations, including Europe, Africa, and the United States, throughout this year.

Emphasising its dedication to expanding its global presence, AAX said it is introducing new specifications, longer-range, and more efficient aircraft into its fleet.

Of particular significance are the eagerly awaited A330neo and A321XLR, both poised to revolutionise the airline's capabilities and elevate passenger experiences, it said in a statement.

With these advancements, the airline is confident in sustaining its growth trajectory and ensuring continued profitability.

For the fiscal year ended Dec 31, 2023 (FY23), AAX maintained a fleet of 18 aircraft, 16 of which are operational.

The company aims to activate its full fleet in the upcoming quarter, expecting completion by the second quarter of 2024, thereby maximising its operational capacity.

AAX said this strategic move aligns with its goal of relaunching key profitable markets, particularly with the ongoing recovery in China extending into 2024.

The airline has announced plans to launch its maiden flight to Kazakhstan, specifically to Almaty, by March 2024.

This expansion is anticipated to unlock further opportunities for the group, enhancing connectivity and synergies within the FlyThru network.

Benyamin Ismail, chief executive officer of AAX, revealed that nearly 90 per cent of the airline's full fleet is operational, marking a significant milestone after enduring pandemic-induced disruptions.

He said the company anticipates the final two aircraft to rejoin operations by the first half of the year.

AAX reported a decline in net profit to RM366.5 million for FY23, compared to RM33.14 billion in the corresponding period last year.

However, revenue saw a notable increase to RM2.53 billion, up from RM659.59 million registered a year earlier.

In the fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2023, AAX recorded a net profit of RM27.4 million, with earnings per share of 6.10 sen, compared to RM153.5 million, or 37.00 sen per share, in the same period the previous year.
