Masimo opens flagship medical device plant

KUALA LUMPUR: Masimo Medical Technologies Malaysia Sdn Bhd has opened its first medical device production facility in Pasir Gudang, Johor.  

The facility, spanning 133,000 square feet (sq ft), is located near major seaports and international airports, the company said in a statement. 

It features production areas and warehouses, specifically crafted to support the creation and distribution of advanced medical solutions.  

With 81,220 sq ft dedicated to production and 46,631 sq ft for warehousing, the company is ready to boost its manufacturing prowess and address the increasing need for top-notch medical devices. 

The grand opening ceremony was attended by government officials from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) to acknowledge Malaysia's role in supporting medical innovation and investment. 

MIDA chief executive officer Datuk Arham Abdul Rahman said the opening of Masimo Malaysia's facility is a clear testament to the country's growing influence in the global medical technology landscape.  

He added that it is not only a major leap for Masimo Malaysia but also strengthens the medical device ecosystem in the southern region.  

"It underscores confidence in Malaysia's business-friendly environment and the robustness of our medical device supply chain, affirming the country's status as a preferred destination for high-value manufacturing and innovation-driven investments. 

"This fully export-oriented project will be supported by a Malaysian technical workforce with more than 27 per cent of the total manpower ranging from the managerial, technical, and supervisory categories," he said. 

Arham noted that the initiative also aligns with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, aiming for a more integrated medical device industry to enhance competitiveness through better resource use, cost savings, increased innovation, and advanced product development. 

He said MIDA is happy to support Masimo Malaysia's growth, which complements its strategy to make Malaysia a leading hub for medical technology development and manufacturing. 

Meanwhile, Masimo Malaysia plant manager Jayakumar Krishnan said the company's cutting-edge facility represents a significant investment in the future of healthcare. 

"We are excited to leverage Malaysia's strategic location and robust infrastructure to drive innovation and growth in the region," he added. 

Masimo Malaysia, stands as the sole manufacturer in the country, producing the Pulse Oximetry Adhesive Sensor and Pulse Oximeter. 

Since its inception in September 2022, Masimo Malaysia has made significant strides in establishing its presence in the region.  

From the commencement of the hiring process and site commissioning to the completion of production area renovations and the commencement of direct labour hiring, the company said it has demonstrated commitment and determination in improving patient outcomes and reducing the cost of care. 

As the company embarks on this new chapter of growth and expansion, it remains steadfast in its mission to improve patient outcomes and revolutionise the healthcare industry through innovation, collaboration, and excellence. 

In 2023, the medical devices industry saw the approval of 26 projects, attracting investments totalling RM2.1 billion.
