Electric, autonomous Protons next following Geely acquisition?

KUALA LUMPUR: Future Proton models may be equipped with features such as autonomous driving and electric drive following Geely's purchase of a 49.9 per cent stake in Proton.

The association with Geely will give access to a host of technologies and possible shared platforms that Proton may use in the development of its new models.

Last year, Reuters reported that Geely-owned Volvo Car Group and auto safety group Autoliv would form a joint venture to develop software for autonomous driving.

According to the report, the two companies said they would have an initial work force of 200 sourced from both companies and eventually 600 in the medium term.

It will develop advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous drive (AD) systems for use in Volvo Cars.

Geely is also developing its new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which will be used to drive sales of Volvo's small car range.

This shared platform, would include a pure battery electric car, in line with a target to electrify all models.
