VW fan wins trip to Austria

Mohamad Syazwan Mohamad Naim, a GTI fan, has won the grand prize of an all-expense trip to Wörthersee GTI Festival in Austria, courtesy of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM).

The 26-year old won the prize after battling it out in the Grand Finale against the two other finalists, Moh King Yew and Abu Ubaidah Amir.

The finale took place in front of a live audience at the recent Volkswagen Tour roadshow at One Utama Shopping Centre. The Wörthersee GTI contest ran from March 20 to 27, and garnered more than 1,500 submissions.

To compete, participants had to register, then complete a slogan and answer 10 questions correctly in the fastest time, with the top three fastest participants qualifying for the Grand Finale. Syazwan said he spent an entire week polishing his GTI knowledge to prepare for the contest.

“It’s been a nerve-wrecking week, and I had to stay up all night before the Grand Finale to make sure I covered everything on the GTI. To win this trip is a dream come true. I couldn’t be more excited,” said Syazwan, who will be bringing his younger brother with him to Austria.

During the Grand Finale, Syazwan correctly answered all the questions concerning historical and technical aspects of the Golf and the Wörthersee GTI Festival.

VPCM managing director Erik Winter said the Wörthersee GTI Contest was a way of celebrating the enthusiasm and devotion of GTI fans in Malaysia.

“We are delighted to be able to present this once-in-a-lifetime chance to our winner. Congratulations on a well-deserved win to Syazwan,” he added.

This year marks the 37th year of the festival. The GTI Festival is held every May on the shores of Lake Wörth, or Wörthersee as it is known in German. What started as a small gathering of Volkswagen GTI owners is now a full-fledged event with modified, classic and vintage Volkswagen cars that attracts more than 100,000 fans around the world.

VPCM’s Wörthersee GTI Contest was held in conjunction with the launch of the new Golf family in Malaysia, where four variants were introduced. The new Golf comes in two variants with a 1.4 TSI engine - the Sportline and R-Line that are priced at RM 155,990 and RM169,990, respectively.

The ultimate hot-hatch, the GTI, comes with a 2.0 TSI turbocharged engine and is priced at RM239,990, while the legendary Golf R is powered by a 2.0 TSI all-wheel drive turbocharged engine and priced at RM295,990.
