Record first half 2019 sales for Volvo

KUALA LUMPUR: Volvo Cars recorded 340,826 units sold as of last month, making it the highest ever first half year sales for the company.

The figure is an increment of 7.3 per cent compared to the 317,639 cars sold during the same period last year.

China, United States and Europe all recorded a steady growth for the six-month period, with China having its highest ever volume sales in the first half and June.

The performance for the first half of the year is contributed by strong demand for Volvo’s sports utility vehicle (SUV) range led by the XC60, and followed by XC40 and XC90 in sales volume order.

The XC60 is also the top selling model globally, with sales reaching 97,203 units, and the XC40 and XC90 both recorded sales figures of 61,864 and 47,818 units respectively.

All three SUVs also gained positive growth compared to their respective first half of 2018 sales figures. The company sold 88,786 units of XC60, 23,741 units of XC40 and 47,658 units of XC90 in the aforementioned period.

The sales figure of the award-winning XC40 took the biggest step up, most likely due to it being the latest addition to Volvo’s SUV lineup.

Last month, Volvo Cars sold 62,775 cars, down two per cent compared to the same period last year. The decline came from Europe where sales for the month fell nine per cent to 30,234 cars, as Sweden (Volvo’s largest market in the region) reported a 41.7 per cent sales decline to 5,762 cars.

Sweden sales in the month were lower because of higher than usual delivery of cars in the same month last year due to the implementation of a new emission tax or the Bonus Malus from the subsequent month.

The company reported its highest ever first half year sales in China of 67,741 cars, up 10.2 per cent, compared to the same period last year.

Volvo’s US sales reached 50,120 cars in the first half of the year, up 5.2 per cent compared to the same period last year.
