Petronas celebrates sixth F1 world championship with Hamilton and Bottas

KUALA LUMPUR: Petronas celebrated its sixth consecutive FIA Formula One World Constructors’ Championship achievement in KLCC with twospecial guests, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

With the world constructors’ and driver’s world championship, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport became the first team in the sport’s history to win six double championships in a row.

The Silver Arrows secured the constructors’ title in Japan, where Bottas claimed the race win, while Hamilton became the second most successful F1 driver of all time at the US Grand Prix.

The drivers expressed their appreciation to Petronas for its contribution to Mercedes’ success over the last decade of partnership during the celebration held at the Petronas Twin Towers.

“It’s become a great tradition that Petronas invite us to their headquarters to celebrate the championships together – they’re a very important part of the team, and we could not have done this without them,” Hamilton said.

“This incredible success is down to the hard work and dedication of every single member of our Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport family. We will keep pushing next season and hope to elevate our game together again,” he added.

Since the introduction of the hybrid power-unit in 2014, Petronas – through its Fluid Technology Solutions – powered Mercedes to six double world championships.

During the last 10 seasons of partnership, they have scored a total of 92 Grand Prix victories from 196 races to date, taken 102 pole positions and took 193 trophies home.

Bottas commented: “This has been my best season yet in Formula One and I am very grateful for all the hard work that went into making this possible.

“Our 2019 car is an absolute beast and the contribution from everyone at Petronas is right at the heart of it. The fuel and lubricants are the lifeblood of our car.”

He added: “I know that it’s not just our team-mates back at Brackley and Brixworth that are already working flat-out to find even more performance for next year’s car, it’s also a lot of colleagues here at Petronas who will unlock even more power for our 2020 car.”

Also present during the celebration was Petronas president and group chief executive officer, Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin.

He said winning six consecutive constructors’ championships is an outstanding demonstration of shared success as title and technical partner of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport.

“The successful partnership with Mercedes-AMG is a demonstration of this aspiration where we continue to support the team with innovative offerings through our Fluid Technology Solutions.”

Team principal and chief executive officer of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, Toto Wolff added: “Petronas has been our partner from day one – they have been by our side every step of the way, ever since we returned to F1 with our works team in 2010.

“Back then, no one would have imagined that this unprecedented success would be possible. But we wrote Formula One history together, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport is the first team in F1 to win six consecutive double titles.”
