Double win for MMU student

ELYN Kuan Yie Meng, a final-year Multimedia University (MMU) student, did the country proud with her recent accolades — she won the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW) World Prize in Financial Management and the prestigious Howitt Prize for being the best student in the ICAEW ACA December 2016 examinations.

She accepted the World Prize and the Howitt Prize in a recent awards ceremony at Chartered Accountants’ Hall in London, the United Kingdom, where ICAEW hailed the world’s top-scoring chartered accountancy students as the “future of the accounting profession”.

ICAEW Malaysia head Loh Wei Yuen said Malaysia holds the record for the highest number of ICAEW World Prize winners in the region. Loh added: “Kuan’s accomplishment reflects the objectives of ICAEW’s partnership with TalentCorp Exclusive Pathways to develop high calibre Malaysian students who achieve excellence in finance, accounting and business.”

In the previous year, Kuan won the first place in Malaysia for the Audit and Assurance paper (December 2015 examinations) and is among the pioneer batch of the Bachelor of Accounting (Honours) students enrolled in the ICAEW-TalentCorp Exclusive Pathways that aim to give outstanding students a headstart in their accounting careers.

Kuan thanked MMU for the learning and teaching experience that contributed to her success. She said: “Without the guidance and patience of my lecturers, I would not be able to thoroughly understand the syllabus designed to fully prepare undergraduates for their future undertakings.”

For those who wish to follow in her footsteps, Kuan added: “We should constantly find ways to unlock our potential and believe in our ability to achieve our goals. Determination and hard work will always be the key to success. Never give up and never stop trying.”

MMU’s Bachelor of Accounting (Honours) is a four-year Malaysian Institute of Accounting programme that provides the knowledge and skills required to become professional accountants. Available in its Melaka as well as the Cyberjaya campus, the faculties provide students with an understanding of accounting with adequate fundamentals and clear exposure on every subject.
