Insights from global companies in London

NINETEEN students from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) visited several international companies during the varsity’s three-week London Global Campus (LGC) programme recently.

Joined by 17 students from Brunei’s Kolej International Graduate Studies (KIGS) which runs degree programmes through an academic collaboration with LUCT, the students learned about the companies’ history and how they leave their mark in the world.

It was also an opportunity for students to discover the city of London, its uniqueness and what it’s like to live in the West.

“Based on the concept of ‘Merging the best of East and West’, we took part in specialised workshops, cultural visits and talks by companies such as Adidas factory in Stockport, Manchester and Chelsea Football Club located in Stamford Bridge. We went to 20 places throughout our 19 days of visit in the United Kingdom. Apart from London, we visited Cambridge, Bath — also known as the ‘Little Rome’, and the Stonehenge — a heritage site which was built 5,000 years ago,” said Information and Communication Technology Bachelor of Science student Sarah Azhar, who participated in the programme.

One of the many places that left an impression on the students was the Silicon Roundabout.

“Also known as the Old Street Roundabout, it covers areas between Old Street and Shoreditch in East London and is widely known as a technology district today. A place that had earlier started out with lower rental rate, it is now booming with more than 600 web-businesses such as Soundcloud, Google, Facebook and TweetDeck. It also remains a key area for tech startups, and provides the requirements an uprising company needs,” she said.

The group also visited Impact Hub — a community of locally owned collaborative working spaces at Westminster.

The other highlight was a workshop by Aardman Animations, a British animation studio that does stopmotion clay animation films and television series like Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep. Held at LUCT London branch, students got to learn how to create the Shaun the Sheep character from scratch which they enjoyed.

Towards the end of the tour, participants learnt new strategies, key business ethics and developed skills needed in order to have a more global mindset.

“Being an IT student, I feel that LGC has made me more aware about things that are related to my field.

The things that we have discovered shall be really useful for us in the near future,” Sarah said.
