NST Education assistant editor bags award for cyber security coverage

CYBERJAYA: The New Straits Times Education assistant editor Rozana Sani has received an award for her coverage on cyber security in Higher Ed of the New Straits Times (NST) at a ceremony honouring local media last night.

Rozana received the CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) Most Supportive Media Practitioner Award for the journalist category. The appreciation ceremony was held in conjunction with the 2019 Cyber Security Industry Dialogue at the launch of CyberSecurity Malaysia Collaboration Programme (CCP) on April 23.

On winning the award, Rozana said while she was happy that the efforts have been recognised, there is a lot more to discuss as we progress towards Industrial Revolution 4.0.

“Along with the advancement of cyber technologies, there come threats and opportunities. This cybersecurity issue cuts across all sectors so everyone must be aware of how it affects our lives.”

“Education plays a huge role in keeping pace with cybersecurity issues. There is a lot to explore in terms of technology from the social, economic and even the legal perspectives,” said Rozana, who was also previously attached to the NST Technology Desk for close to 19 years before joining the Education Desk.

“The escalating issues show that there is a need to have more experts and manpower involved. Therefore, the media needs to shed light on what our Malaysian universities are doing to progress in this field. It is our responsibility to discover where their strengths lie and how they can work with the authorities as well as the public and private sectors to advance together in tackling the problems.”

The Communications and Multimedia Ministry deputy secretary-general (operations), Tan Chuan Ou represented the Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo at the ceremony.

“I believe that integrated efforts between the government and the media are highly needed to educate Malaysians on the issue of cybersecurity. Media has the power to influence the public perception as the internet has become the medium for transmitting news and information,” said Gobind Singh Deo in his speech that was read out by Tan.

During the event, Media Prima Berhad also bagged the CSM Most Supportive Media Appreciation Award for the organisation category.
