New submarine cable promises faster Internet speed for Sabah, Sarawak

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah and Sarawak are expected to have better Internet speed when Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) has completed the 3,800-km submarine fibre optic cable project.

State TM general manager Sukkuriya Masri said the cable, linking Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, with capability of providing 4Tbps broadband capacity, is expected to meet the rising demands in both states for the next five years.

“The last count of Internet usage among users in Sabah saw an increase of about 150 per cent on annual basis.

“Meanwhile, our existing Internet speed is at 700gigabytes per second and will be retired once we have the new cable,” he said during a breaking fast event with state media here yesterday.

Sukkuriya added that TM would continue to improve its services on coverage as well as doubling the speed at the same price for existing UniFi broadband users.
