Rise of robot cleaners

Hate to clean your house? Good news, there are robots to help you, writes Izwan Ismail

HOUSE chores like sweeping, vacuuming, mopping and cleaning the windows may look easy but these daily tasks take a lot of time.

China-based company Ecovacs Robotics has introduced some of its “cleaner robots” aimed at helping people clean their homes easily, at the tap of the phone screen.

Deebot is designed to not just vacuum, but also mop the floor. Winbot is specifically made for cleaning windows.

Ecovacs vice president of global channels Jonathan Tang says the robots complement the high-tech lifestyle of today’s individuals.

“Most people, especially the working community, are busy and usually don’t have much time to do the mundane and repeated house chores like sweeping, vacuming and mopping the floor,” he adds. “So these robots are designed to relieve them from those tasks so that they can do more of the things they love.”

INTELLIGENT CLEANERS
The Internet of Things is very much embedded in Deebot and Winbot.

“Much research and development has been put into their development. Ecovacs Robotics has devoted its efforts to developing intelligent home robotics for the last 20 years, dedicating itself to improving lifestyles through innovative and smart technology,” says Tang.

The company’s latest Deebot Ozmo series of floor cleaning robots, which will be available soon, features a sensor that allows a smarter switch between vacuuming and mopping with more efficient water flow.

The Deebot R95, for example, has smart navigation technology embedded in it, which can map its cleaning areas, recharge itself and be controlled remotely.

“With this AI element, the robots have the ability to accurately create virtual maps of the environment in their “brains”, allowing them to accurately plan the most efficient cleaning paths around the entire home.”

This is possible with the proprietary Smart Navi technology. “It safely scans, maps and plans an efficient cleaning path which adapts to your home to provide the most effective clean possible.”

The technology also allows users to define the boundaries that they want the robot to clean and the R95 will know where to clean and where not to clean. To make it even easier to manage, the robot can also discharge its load into a specific holder and recharge itself when its battery is running low.

“The robot will find or return to its charging dock once its battery level drops low enough.”

And after charging or emptying, R95 can return to where it last cleaned; smart enough that routine interruptions don’t actually interrupt and it can continue cleaning.

The Deebot moves safely around your home using anti-drop sensors to clean up on and around staircases without the risk of falling.

RISK-FREE
As window-cleaning is a fundamental part of housework, the Winbot was created to solve safety issues that come with climbing ladders to reach otherwise inaccessible window panes.

Models such as Winbot 950 and 850 demonstrate gravity-defying cleaning capabilities that keep windows clean without the need for a ladder, keeping the cleaning routine risk-free.

DEMAND
Tang believes that such home innovations will be well-received by tech-driven households.

“We are continually developing more innovative home robots by making large investments and effort into R&D, ensuring that our products can be used with minimal supervision and more efficiency. This is an attraction for people who pursue quality life.”

The Deebot robots are priced between RM800 and RM5,000.
