Game on: Fresh off the shelf

Changes are afoot at Sony Interactive Entertainment but for now, the new games for Playstation are still a perk for members

THIS year is said to be a year of changes for Sony Interactive Entertainment and PS Plus members can expect the changes to affect them. However, the slew of free games will keep on coming as this is a major perk that comes with the membership. Here are some of them:

1. BLOODBORNE

First up is the award-winning action RPG, Bloodborne.

The game takes place in Yharnam, a decrepit Gothic city known for its medical advances using blood as a primary tool.

Over the years, many people have travelled to the city to seek a remedy for their afflictions. In the case of the protagonist, he also makes his way there but his reasons are not disclosed.

Upon arrival, he discovers that Yharnam is plagued with an illness that has transformed most of its citizens into bestial creatures.

The player must navigate the streets of Yharnam during the night of The Hunt and overcome all sorts of monstrosities in order to stop the source of the plague.

Fun fact: Bloodborne was developed by FromSoftware, the brains behind the Dark Souls and Demon’s Souls games. As such, the game will feel very similar to those games, especially its action role-playing game concept and its notorious difficulty.

However, game director Hidetaka Miyazaki has denied Bloodborne’s link or similarity to any of these games.

2. GAROU: MARK OF THE WOLVES

This game will be available for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita users.

First released in 1999, the game takes place 10 years after Geese Howard’s death and the city of Southtown has become more peaceful. It’s now be known as the Second Southtown.

A new fighting tournament called King of Fighters: Maximum Mayhem starts in the area and several characters related to the fighters from the previous King of Fighters tournaments take part. Incidentally, this game is part of SNK Playmore’s Fatal Fury fighting game series.

Fun fact: Garou: Mark of the Wolves was first released for Japanese arcades in November 1999.

It was later ported to Neo Geo and Sega Dreamcast and renamed Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves.

This was done to make its ties to the Fatal Fury fighting game series clearer rather than it being another fighting game series under SNK Playmore.

3. BOMBING BUSTERS

This game is also available for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita users. It is a multiplayer game designed for players to work together and against each other to combat against hordes of enemies in a maze-type environment.

To play, just bomb nasty critters in a series of 30 different mazes and defeat hellish bosses in heroic fights.

Gamers can play solo or against other players in battles filled with all sorts of chaos and mayhem. Embark on a hilarious journey with the witty Dr Wallow to conquer the galaxy in this explosively fun arcade game.

Fun fact: Bombing Busters was created by Sanuk Games that has worked on a big number of arcade-style games across numerous platforms since 2004.

While most of them have not had any major issues, Bombing Busters was famous for needing to be renamed due to the original name using a word that wasn’t considered family-friendly.

4. THE DARKNESS II

This is a first-person shooter mixed with role-playing game elements developed by Digital Extremes.

Two years since the events of the previous game, Jackie Estacado has become the Don of the Franchetti family. Although he still wields power from The Darkness, he has managed to suppress it with the help of estranged occultist Johnny Powell.

Unfortunately, Powell became mentally unstable and ran away from Estacado as he feared that The Darkness would continue to influence him and make his condition worse.

Estacado must now find a way to deal with The Darkness himself even as he grapples with the death of his girlfriend.

Fun fact: The Darkness II is not developed by Starbreeze Studios, the developers of the first game. According to the Starbreeze CEO Mikael Nermark, the company was not given the option of working on the sequel and they were already busy working on Syndicate by the time the game was first announced.

To sweeten the deal for this month’s lineup, Sony Interactive Entertainment has also included the NieR Music Concert, The Memories of Puppet, which was held in Tokyo and Osaka last year.

It features not only the tracks played at the concert but also the different spoken word audio dramas performed in Tokyo, Osaka, and Taiwan in their entirety.

Additionally, there is a special Monster Hunter: World PlayStation 4 Theme and Avatar Pack, as well as another addition of the Exclusive Toro theme, specifically for March this year. If you need more themes to spice up the look of your PlayStation 4’s dashboard, this will be a good month to consider being a PS Plus member.

As for the earlier-mentioned changes at Sony Interactive Entertainment, one that has been confirmed there will no more be free PlayStation 3 and PS Vita games starting March next year.
