Becoming a better player

It’s important to pick a Legend that can complement your squad

OUTWIT, outplay and outlast. That was the concept for the reality show Survivor but it also applies to the newest and arguably most popular battle royale game today, Apex Legends.

While the genre isn’t new, Respawn Entertainment’s creation made it challenging for many gamers. To aid the situation, we have some tips and tricks that will easily turn you into a better Apex Legends player.

CHOOSE LEGENDS CAREFULLY
The one thing that separates Apex Legends from most battle royale games is that you can choose your characters.

These characters are known as “Legends” and each has his own set of skills.

When picking your Legend, it’s important to select one where the skills and abilities can complement your playing style.

For example, if you excel in direct combat, Bangalore and Wraith are good choices as they have abilities that are geared for combat.

For instance, Bangalore will get a speed boost when she’s getting gunned down. Meanwhile, Wraith has a passive ability that will inform you if someone’s trying to shoot you and your squad down.

However, it’s more important to pick a Legend that can complement your squad. If you already have two offence-based Legends, it is better to pick someone like Lifeline or Gibraltar which can bolster the squad’s survivability. Gibraltar’s Dome of Protection and

Lifeline’s Heal Drone can easily aid the team in many slugfests. The key here is to experiment and picks a Legend with good synergy.

WEAPONS’ CHOICE
There are a wide variety of weapons but you can’t simply choose a weapon of your liking. You’ll have to try your luck with looting through the map and see what you can obtain.

As soon as you start dropping, it’s better to just use whatever you can get your hands on but as the game goes on, you should be able to choose from a wider selection.

If you’re the type who enjoys dealing plenty of damage in a single shot, the Wingman pistol and the Peacekeeper shotgun are your best friend.

If you’d rather have a rapid fire-type weapon, the M600 Spitfire and the R301 Carbine are great options. For long range combat, the Triple Take and Longbow sniper rifles can take down enemies quickly if you have the accuracy for it.

It’s worth experimenting around with other weapons to see what works best for you. There’s no real “best weapon”, only what’s most suitable.

After all, weapons are useless if you can’t hit a target. You can also use weapons with the same type of bullets as your preferred weapon so if you stumble upon it later, you can easily swap it without worrying about ammo.

WHEN LOOTING...
When you’re scouring through the map for items and equipment, it can be easy to get carried away and just pick up everything you come across. Given the limited time and inventory capacity, you have to be smart when it comes to looting, to ensure success. As such, there are items and equipment that you need to prioritise over others.

The items that you need regardless of the situation are armours, helmets, and knockdown shields. These essentially give you extra health points and reduce damage. Then you have health packs and shield charges, which will replenish your health and armour gauges.

This may sound basic but it’s more than just looting for yourselves as you need your whole squad to gear up as well.

For instance, when there’s a lack of bullets or high-quality armour, prioritise it for those who will be dealing with direct combat the most. The same rule applies to weapon attachments as this will allow your squad to make the most out of a bad situation.

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK
Ultimately, Apex Legends is a team based game. No matter how good one player is, it can virtually never beat a well-coordinated team. The most important thing is to not stray too far off from your squad. Enemies will often pick off lone players as it will weaken the squad.

Whenever you’re moving around the map, be sure to stick close to your squad. Whether it’s for looting or to scout around, it’s best to have everyone in check. If there comes a point where one needs to be far from the others for scouting purposes, make sure to have the other two players keep watch in case of an ambush.

Ultimately, the key to working efficiently with your squad is communication. Always keep them informed of where you are going as well as enemy locations. Given the vast size of the map, simply telling them that enemies are nearby instead of pinpointing exact location can be frustrating. Every piece of information can mean the difference between winning and losing.

THE MAP IS VITAL
Our final tip is one that many Apex Legends players often take for granted and never fully utilise. It is with regards to the map, in which there’s more than meets the eye. In every game, areas in the map can be divided into three different zones; high-tier loot zone, mid-tier loot zone and low-tier loot zone.

Areas such as Artillery, Airbase and Water Treatment tend to yield high quality loot whereas areas like Market and Hydro Dam usually yield simple equipment at best.

At the same time, there are areas known as Hot Zones and the Supply Ship, which have better chances of containing high quality loot than anywhere else but plenty of squads will be going as well, making it tough to survive.

While it will be great if you can somehow make your way out of the area alive with good loot, it can turn into a very short round for your squad.

Essentially, it’s high risk but high reward so you have two choices here — play it safe so you can survive longer or try your luck so you’ll have better quality equipment from the get-go. There’s no universally successful strategy here, so you’ll have to play accordingly with the situation.

When you’ve mastered all these tips, you will have a much better chance to be crowned the Apex Champions.
