Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp suffer worldwide glitch

KUALA LUMPUR: Social media activities were interrupted when the three major platforms - Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp - were all down at about the same time.

The glitch started on Wednesday where social media users reported that were having problems uploading feeds and content on these platforms.

For Instagram, users that the profile page refused to load while others face uploading issues and attempts to upload insta-story brings up an error message of “Uploading fail. Try again".

As for Facebook users, empty news feeds and inability to ‘react’ to friends’ posting were among problems reported while WhatsApp users had trouble sending and receiving messages.

This kind of glitch is not new to users as in March this year, millions of users were affected when Facebook faced down time that lasted more than 24 hours, which was reported caused by a server issue.

According to AFP report, Facebook and Instagram said they were “back at 100 percent” late evening (early Thursday morning for Malaysians) after experiencing the outages for hours.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp and Facebook appeared to be experiencing the glitches still.

And based on checks done on some users in Malaysia, some said they are still experiencing some strange issues such as ‘burn-in effect’ on Facebook postings as of Thursday morning.

Based on the DownDetector report, an analytics service that calls itself a weather report for the internet, some of the affected users are in the US, Japan, Australia and Mexico, but there were reported across the world, with significant numbers of reports also coming from Europe, South America and East Asia where more than 14,000 users reported issues with Instagram, while more than 7,500 and 1,600 users reported issues with Facebook and WhatsApp.

Facebook has more than 2.3 billion monthly active users and Instagram has 1 billion.
