#TECH: Designed for creativity and fun

I recently had the privilege of getting my hands on the Honor Magic V2, which was launched last week.

This new foldable phone, the Magic V2 redefines the boundaries of what a smartphone can be.

Thinnest and lightest inward foldable

The first thing that strikes me about the Magic V2 is its featherlight build and razor-thin profile. Weighing only 231g and folding to a mere 9.9mm thickness, it is said to be the thinnest and lightest inward foldable currently, compared to other foldable phones and bar phones as well.

The millimetre-era thickness, below 1cm when folded, sets a new standard.

Build quality

Despite it being a foldable phone, I find the Honor Magic V2 to be sturdy. This could be the result of using a super-light titanium hinge.

A blend of titanium alloy and Honor Shield Steel makes it 42 per cent lighter than stainless steel yet 20 per cent stronger than traditional steel.

Honor claims that the phone is capable of doing 400,000 folds without any gaps between screens.

The durability is further enhanced with the usage of second-generation nanocrystal glass.

Although I didn't do any drop test, Honor said that the phone's drop resistance is 10 times better than regular glass, the external screen holds a 5-Star Drop Resistance Certification from SGS.

The robustness ensures peace of mind for those occasional slip-ups.

Battery life

Having a phone that can last all day long is a plus, and the Magic V2 does just that.

Its thin size is enabled by the usage of a thinner battery, which is a 5000mAh Dual Silicon-Carbon battery.

This battery measures a mere 2.72mm, but provides a 40 per cent longer cycle life. Honor said it got the inspiration from electric vehicle battery technology like Tesla.

Screen

The Honor Magic V2 screen is a visual treat. Its 6.43-inch external screen and a tablet-like 7.92-inch internal screen, are bright and contrasty. It's a joy to look at it, be it for productivity or entertainment.

The screen is also anti-reflective with 3840Hz PWM Dimming technology, which minimises eye strain.

Meanwhile, the Circadian Night display ensures comfort during prolonged use.

Photography

One of the reasons people buy new phones is because they want a better camera.

Well I have to say that the Honor Magic V2's camera will delight you.

I took it out for a few rounds of photography outings and was amazed with the results, especially in low-light condition and the macro.

The rear camera setup features a 50MP wide, 50MP ultra-wide, and 20MP telephoto lenses, along with the 16MP front camera for both external and internal screens.

The camera offers many modes of photography, such as Photo, Night, Portrait, Aperture, Video, Movie, Pro, Slow-Mo, Panorama, Time-Lapse, Watermark, Super Macro, High-Res, Panorama and even Document Scan.

So it does cater to all types of photography needs.

Besides that, the hover photography feature turns the Magic V2 into its own tripod, offering a hands-free photography experience.

For productivity

One main reason people buy foldable phones is to raise their productivity level.

The Honor Magic V2 is designed to help users with that.

It is able to open up to four multi-windows simultaneously - split-screen for horizontal or vertical tasks, Magic Text for text recognition, or the Parallel Space.

Although the device still uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (not the latest Gem 3), it still offers smooth multitasking capabilities, as well as gaming experience.

The Honor Magic V2 is priced at RM6,999.

Verdict: 4/5
