Tried & tested: Ryo's Hamsochoo hair range

SHAMPOOS that use plant ingredients are always popular because there is something very reassuring about using natural products on your hair.

You know it comes from a safe, good source and you feel comfortable using it on your scalp.

Korean brand Ryo has introduced its Hamchosoo scalp care range formulated with ingredients used in Korean traditional rituals.

The range features two different shampoo and conditioner sets.

The Calamus Shining shampoo and conditioner are for those who want to purify scalp for shiny hair while the Evening Primrose Volumising shampoo and conditioner nourish the scalp and provide volume to hair.

Inspired by the Korean words ham (to embrace), cho (herbal) and soo (water), both ranges are inspired by the traditional practice during Dano Day, a celebration that is believed to be filled with positive yang energy.

Korean women come together during this celebration to partake in danojang, where people wash their hair with water of calamus to keep hair and scalp healthy.

PLANT-BASED PRODUCT

Calamus is a flowering plant that grows in the wetlands. Its roots, in particular, are said to offer great benefits to hair, in terms of improving shine and bounce and strengthening the roots.

Evening primrose is a yellow blossom which blooms in the evening and the oil extracted from the flower helps nourish the scalp and adds volume to hair.

Both shampoos emit a very fresh green fragrance upon use.

It's hard to describe the exact nature of the scent except that it feels like an aromatic floral-cum-herbal fragrance from the garden. This results in a very refreshing experience in the shower.

Both products lather very well too. In fact, the calamus shampoo in particular can make your shower cubicle feel like a bubble bath so go easy with the amount you use.

Even a tiny portion gives you a good lather. In my case, just a small amount is enough for my shoulder-length hair.

The calamus range is targeted for those with oily scalp and rough hair.

I find that it's a good option for days when my hair looks lank and flat because of sebum build-up on the scalp.

It cleanses without drying and the conditioner gives just enough gloss and shine to the hair without weighing it down. It's also a good everyday shampoo for most hair types.

SCALP CARE

The evening primrose range is targeted at those with dry scalp and weak, droopy hair.

It literally gives your hair a "lift" so it looks and feels fuller which is something most women want, especially those who are struggling with thinning hair.

I use the volumising shampoo once a week. I find it works well to remove residue from the scalp caused by the use of hair care products over the week.

My hair feels fresh and clean after each wash, almost like it has gone through an overhaul and is ready to start the week again.

The Ryo "Hamchosoo" range is available at all Watsons' store nationwide and online at Watson's, Hermo and Lazada.

WASH RIGHT, DRY WELL

1. Give your scalp a good massage during shampooing to improve blood circulation and promote hair growth.

2. When hair is damp, apply conditioner and let it sit for three minutes before rinsing to absorb the benefits.

3. To avoid frizz, wash hair in cold water to close the cuticles. This also helps boost lustre and shine.

4. Only brush hair when it is partially dry. Brushing wet hair can cause breakage.

5. After a shampoo, gently pat hair dry. Let it air-dry for 3-5 minutes before combing with a wide-toothed comb.

6. Allow hair to dry 70-80 per cent naturally before using your blow-dryer.
