Nespresso drops organic coffee from Congo

Bringing the joy of coffee while creating a meaningful impact on global farming communities is the story behind the release of Nespresso's new organic Congolese coffee, Kahawa ya Congo.

The launch of the rare fine coffee is part of Nespresso's Reviving Origins programme, where the company helps to restore coffee production in fragile coffee farming regions.

Kahawa ya Congo, which translates into Hope of Congo, is grown on the rain-rich volcanic soils of Lake Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it was once a thriving coffee farming community but has been affected by decades of political and economic instability.

The coffee carries a smooth and fruity seasonal blend and is split roast, which means that a small portion of the beans gets a darker roast to bring out the full intensity and body of the coffee.

When mixed with milk, the aroma transforms into a light, sweet and creamy cup full of biscuity notes, a hint of walnut and a silky texture.

Nespresso Malaysia business executive officer Floriane Novello says through the Reviving Origins programme, the company is helping the farmers of Kivu to restore Congolese to its full glory and rebuild their livelihoods.

"Customers can enjoy a truly unique taste experience and play an important role in reviving coffee and communities in DRC after decades of conflict and economic instability," she said.

The project also goes beyond helping the livelihood of the communities. Nespresso, in partnership with Eastern Congo Initiative is also investing CHF1 million to support the establishment of 23 water access points across the Kivu region, to build one primary school and five mobile health clinics.

Customers can buy the coffee at Nespresso boutiques and online via the Nespresso mobile app or website at www.nespresso.com and through its 24/7 toll-free Customer Careline at 1800-80-7001.
