Skin solution for acne

Jasmine Kang's foray into skincare started with her own issues with acne. For more than a decade, the founder of Singapore-based Skinlycious battled acne so she researched and learned ways to balance her skin.

There's no one-way-fits-all method to treat acne and acne-prone skin, she says. "Acne is multi-factorial. Factors such as diet, lifestyle, genetics, skincare and make-up products that we use on our face may affect acne. Hormonal changes affect the condition too," she adds.

"Even within acne-prone skin, there's oily to dry to sensitive skin."

Skinlycious Clear Skin Complete Starter Kit features seven products for a complete skincare routine. The range addresses the root causes of acne, giving users a complete and lasting solution to achieve clear skin. They also help lighten post-acne marks and balance acne-prone skin.

TREATING ACNE

Kang graduated with a degree in biomedical science and a diploma in organic skincare formulation. She experimented with various active ingredients to formulate Skinlycious products and worked with people who suffer from acne to improve her formulation.

The brand started with three items and, over the years, has offered a range of products for people with acne-prone skin of all ages, genders and skin types.

Kang says dealing with acne is a lot about self-awareness and finding a person's own acne triggers. On its website, Skinlycious provides a guide on how to find these acne triggers.

"The greatest realisation for me is that everybody's acne skin is different and breakouts could be due to different causes. Acids-based spot correctors worked very well for me and I thought it would work for everybody but that wasn't the case. As I interacted with more acne fighters, I realised acids made a group of acne fighters' condition worse."

"We then worked to come up with a vitamins-based spot corrector. This helped another group of people. Just last December, I was thrilled to be able to find a solution for people suffering from acne triggered by weakened skin barrier," she says.

USE A MOISTURISER

Kang's acne advice is for a person to use a moisturiser even when he or she has acne. "I wasn't able to find any moisturiser that didn't cause a breakout and I had a deep wrinkle on my forehead in my early 20s. It was only until I met an aesthetic doctor who introduced sodium hyaluronate serum to me that I finally found a moisturiser that I could use.

"My deep wrinkle disappeared. An oil-free, water-based moisturiser with sodium hyaluronate will suit most young acne-prone skin. Skinlycious offers that as its hydrating serum at one-third the price that I used to purchase from my doctor. It is something that I cannot live without, so I try my best to make it as affordable as I can," she says.
