From medical science grad to YouTube sensation, Wany Hasrita now set for bigger things

KUALA LUMPUR: When Wany Hasrita first began uploading her singing videos on mobile application Smule in 2012, she instantly gained attention on other social media platforms.

Little did she know then that her hobby would eventually catapult her into international fame, evident through her garnering over 12 million YouTube views for her first music video "Menahan Rindu".

The 25-year old medical science graduate was selected by Umno to perform at the party's 71st anniversary mega celebration at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium tonight.

She said she was overwhelmed yet grateful for her instant success and for being chosen by Umno to become a Malay icon.

"I am still coming to terms with the popularity I've gained in a little over a year and I'm still trying to blend in the industry.

"I plan to produce more good quality music but at the same time I also want to pursue a postgraduate degree," she said.

On her drive and perseverance to juggle between music and studies, she said she draws inspiration from her mum, who is a single mother.

"I understand the plight of single mothers out there and I intend to contribute more to their cause and welfare," she added.

Umno executive secretary Datuk Ab Rauf Yusoh said they chose Wany to promote her gift as a multitalented artiste to a more mainstream audience, as she was more well known in cyberspace.

“There are many talented youngsters out there who had made their name via the internet, so we want to help them to get closer to their fans in the real world.

"Wany is a good future icon to help sustain the Malay culture as not only is she a good example of a wholesome youth, she can also sing both modern ballads and traditional tunes," he added.
