Tiz, the risk-taker

Actress Tiz Zaqyah shares why she prefers trying out different roles

TIZ Zaqyah first caught the attention of TV viewers when she starred in Kabir Bhatia’s hit drama series Nur Kasih in 2009, three years after her acting debut. She then starred in several other productions, but nothing really hit the spot like Nur Kasih.

In recent times, audience have seen less and less of the 28-year-old actress. So when Tiz was present at a Press conference as part of the cast for telemovie Memori Pajeri Nanas>,

Having been in the industry for a little more than a decade, fans rarely see much gossip about Tiz in recent times. Checks on her Instagram account show how seldom she posts anything personal.

As much as she is selective when accepting acting jobs, Tiz (which is short for Siti Zaqyah Abdul Razak), is known to keep her private life, private.

“There’s nothing much to share,” she says, adding, “But to make my fans happy and let them know that I’m still in the industry, I do post something once in a while. You know, even if it’s just to say ‘Hi’ with a photo of me smiling.”

Rumoured to be romantically-linked to a divorcee, Tiz denies being in any serious relationship at this time and says that she doesn’t even know who the person she is rumoured to be seeing is.

“I know many divorced men and women. So, pray tell which is he?” she says smiling sheepishly.

“Right now, I’m happy being single and enjoying life as it is. It’s a bliss as I don’t have to be burdened by the struggles to keep a relationship going. Besides, I am glad that I don’t have anyone to quarrel with,” she shares.

CAREER CHALLENGES

Trying out different roles gives Tiz more satisfaction.

To avoid being pigeonholed into a particular character, Tiz studies a script before taking on any role.

“What’s the point of playing the same role over and over again. You won’t make much progress in your career if you remain in your comfort zone,” she explains.

“This is the reason why I agreed to Memori Pajeri Nenas,” she says. “The script is fresh and realistic, depicting the everyday life of a young and successful married couple,” she says about her latest telemovie, directed by Aidilfitri Yunos.

This romantic drama, also starring Alif Satar and Siti Saleha, is about a busy married couple — Armand (Alif) and Kayla (Tiz) — who are on the verge of a divorce.

A chef by profession, Armand tries to woo his wife back through his cooking. No prize for guessing how a local delicacy (pajeri nenas) ends up as the title.

PLAYING KAYLA

“This is my first time working with Alif. There’s no question about him being a good actor and that’s what made this project enjoyable. Working with Siti Saleha was also a breeze,” says Tiz.

Being a food lover, Tiz finds it a blessing to be on a drama set that has food as the central theme.

“It definitely has its perks, especially when it comes to eating the prepared food. When you see me chowing down the various dishes in the drama, it wasn’t acting. The dishes were really tasty,” she says with a laugh.

“My eyes are set on doing a biopic in the near future,” she says, adding that it is probably one of the hardest genres for any actors.

“You definitely need to do a lot of research on the character you play. You can’t simply make your own interpretation.”

Besides acting, Tiz is known to be able to carry a tune or two. After all, she has recorded two songs — a duet with singer and music producer Yasin Sulaiman for the soundtrack of Nur Kasih The Movie, and the soundtrack for Oh My English! 2 (which she also acted in) with Sleeq and Zain Saidin.

Is a singing career on her cards? “That will not happen since I have a bad case of stage fright. Even before I hit the stage, I’d be trembling,” she shares.

“Of course, I’d love to challenge myself on other aspects of showbiz like singing or even emceeing. Maybe one day, but don’t ask me when that day will be.”
