Malaysian horror flick Haunted Hotel opens to RM10 million in China

KUALA LUMPUR: Ryon Lee's new horror film Haunted Hotel, which opened in 800 cinemas in China last Thursday, has successfully collected RM10 million at the box office within a week.

The Chinese language film which stars Chinese actor Li Chuan and Thai actress Aom Sushar, with supporting roles by Malaysians Teddy Chin, Nadia Aqilah and Alvin Chong, opens in Malaysian cinemas today.

Producer Aron Koh said he and Lee hoped that Haunted Hotel would repeat the success of The Journey, which was scripted by Lee, three years ago. The Journey collected RM17.16 million at the box office.

"It may be a collaboration of actors from three countries, but it's a wholly Malaysian production, featuring our own condominium Amber Court as the "star" of the show. We chose it as the "haunted hotel" of the title because it's been the subject of lots of "ghost stories" shared on cyberspace," said Koh.

Koh's company Lomo Pictures produced the RM4.8 million film with help from He Media of China. "We filmed it in May last year, within 20 days."

The 92-minute film, which also highlights mental illness, family tragedy and infidelity, uses Computer Generated Images (CGI) and will soon be screened in Hong Kong and Thailand.
