#Showbiz: Is singer Idayu driven by love or desperation?

KUALA LUMPUR: Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Singer Idayu’s recent videos on YouTube which showcased her vocal impressions of a host of celebrated artistes certainly garnered lots of flattery.

Netizens commented positively on her spectacular renditions of songs by the likes of Celine Dion, Shakira and Mariah Carey, as well as Dayang Nurfaizah, Ziana Zain and Jaclyn Victor.

But the AF Megastar winner was also aware of some quarters who considered her endeavour as a desperate attempt to garner attention.

In a BH Online news report today, she said: "What I’m doing is exploring the landscape of the musical world and accommodating the requests of fans that have supported me all this while.

“I have longed to perform vocal impressions of famous artistes for quite a while now, even since my days as a student at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

"My close friends have also urged me to showcase my mimicking ability, although I was not very confident initially about doing it,” she said.

Idayu added that it was hard to perform effective vocal impressions because she had to present the right tonal variation, vocal timbres and clarity in pronunciation, as well as master the individual techniques of the various artistes.

From the videos, the singer had the uncanny ability to sound almost exactly like the artistes she was mimicking.

"Thank God my efforts have been received well. I have also seen an increase in my social media followers online,” she said.
