#Showbiz: Bront to star in HBO horror series 'Folklore'

Fans of Bront Palarae can catch the actor on HBO Asia’s upcoming horror anthology drama series Folklore.

The Halfworlds Seasons 1 and 2 and Satan’s Slave actor will be joined by Japanese sensation Kazuki Kitamura (of Godzilla: Final Wars and Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Volume 2 fame) in the original series, scheduled to premiere later this year on the channel’s on-air, online and on-demand platforms.

Created by award-winning Singaporean filmmaker Eric Khoo, the six-episode, hour-long series will take place in Asian countries, including Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Principal photography has already begun for Folklore in these countries, where each episode will be based on each country’s superstitions and myths.

The stories seek to modernise Asian horror to explore societal dysfunctions in a manner that is specific to the country, and, at the same time, possess themes that will resonate across the continent.

Each episode will be helmed by different directors — Joko Anwar (Indonesia), Takumi Saitoh (Japan), Lee Sang-Woo (South Korea), Ho Yuhang (Malaysia), Eric Khoo (Singapore) and Pen-Ek Ratanaruang (Thailand).

Folklore will be filmed in the local language of each country, with English and local language subtitles (where available).

HBO Asia chief executive Jonathan Spink said Folklore was created to embrace Asia’s culture and history.

“We’re looking forward to telling these myths and stories to audiences in the region and the rest of the world,” he said.
