#Showbiz: Yuna once told 'not fair-skinned enough to be artiste'

KUALA LUMPUR: International singer-songwriter Yuna recently confessed that she used to be self-conscious of her darker skin tone.

In a post on her Instagram account, the 32-year-old LA-based Malaysian wrote: “I grew up in Malaysia always feeling self-conscious about my skin because I was a little on the darker side (I played sports in the sun!). Girls around me just wanted to have fairer skin and did all they could to have fairer skin.”

The multiple award-winning artiste added: “Even in my early years back in KL in the entertainment industry, appearing in magazines people would say ‘she’s not fair-skinned enough to be an artiste!’ I have to admit that I even believed them and even stayed out of the sun, so I wouldn’t get too dark. Seriously!”

Now older and wiser, the Crush and Best Love hitmaker explained that she had learnt to love herself. “I know better now, proud of my tan-sawo matang skin, hope all the girls out there are proud of the colour of their skin too, every skin tone is beautiful,” she wrote in the post that drew over 23,000 likes and garnered many encouraging and supportive comments.
