'The Fast And The Furious' gets a spin-off

KUALA LUMPUR: Fans of the popular American action film franchise The Fast And The Furious, will soon get another treat – in the form of animated series.

Entertainment Weekly recently reported that the animated series will be released on Netflix, following a deal between the entertainment company with DreamWorks Animation Television.

The animated series will focus on a new character, teenager Tony Toretto, who follows his cousin Dom’s (a character played by Vin Diesel in the live action movies) footsteps.

Tony and his friends are recruited by the government to infiltrate an elite racing league which is believed to serve as a front for a crime organisation.

Tim Hedrick (DreamWorks’ Voltron Legendary Defender) and Bret Haaland (All Hail King Julien) will serve as executive producers and showrunners, but the show will also maintain its ties to the live-action franchise with Vin Diesel, Neal Moritz, and Chris Morgan serving as producers.

“We are thrilled to take our fantastic partnership with DreamWorks Animation to the next level with new opportunities from the vast library of Universal Pictures,” the portal quoted Netflix’s vice president Melissa Cobb.

Cobb also added: “The Fast and Furious franchise is a global phenomenon beloved by audiences of all ages, and we can’t wait to get started on the new animated series that will capture the action, heart, humour and global appeal of the feature films.”

Netflix however has not released any date for the premier of the animation series.

Meanwhile, there are still two more live-action films for the franchise, which are set to be released in April 2020 and April 2021.
