#Showbiz: Sheila Majid happy 'Boneka' selling well despite no airplay

KUALA LUMPUR: Popular singer Datuk Sheila Majid is not perturbed by radio stations not playing songs from her latest album Boneka.

The 54-year-old long-standing artiste fondly dubbed the “Queen of Jazz” explained that to her, it was more important that the album was well received by the public.

“Honestly, I’m not bothered about whether the radio stations want to play my songs on air or not.

“The main reason why I made the album was because of my fans. They were the ones who paid for the entire cost of producing the album, so I didn't have to fork out a single cent,” she said in a news report today.

Sheila said that she was not chasing after popularity and added: “I didn’t even think about whether my songs would make it into the popular music charts or not.”

“What’s important is that this product does well in terms of sales and that I can organise a concert in conjunction with the release of the album,” she said.

Boneka, which was released about a year ago, is her latest album in 13 years.

On a different note, Sheila, who chairs the board of Recording Performers Malaysia (RPM), revealed that she had been approached by another popular singer who had requested for her assistance in relation to the issue of songs not played on the radio.

“I know that many artistes are faced with this problem. But I can’t help on this matter since it is out of my power to do so.

“My job is related to the issues pertaining to royalties. Perhaps they could refer to other artistes associations for assistance,” said Sheila when met during a recent gala dinner benefit for Under Our Wings at the Sunway Convention Centre in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya.
