#Showbiz: Woman cannot be charged for raping man, says lawyer

KUALA LUMPUR: There has not been a case in Malaysia where a woman has been charged for rape, except in the popular drama series Nur 2.

This is lawyer Nor Zabetha’s reaction to the last episode of Nur 2, where the antagonist Juita played by Azar Azmi gets charged with “raping” the protagonist Ustaz Adam, played by Syafiq Kyle.

In a Facebook post today, Nor Zabetha said: “It’s absurd for Juita to be charged with raping Ustaz Adam. Even though the characters are fictitious, the law of the land should be reasonably portrayed, lest viewers get misinformed about it.”

She added: “I’ve been a lawyer for a decade and never have I heard of women getting charged for raping men. Section 375 of the Penal Code says men commit rape against women, not vice-versa, so Juita could not be charged with raping Ustaz Adam.”

Nor Zabetha also said that the producers of Nur 2 should have made the police enlighten Ustaz Adam about the law when he made a report about “getting raped”.

“Juita spiked Ustaz Adam’s drink and made it look like he seduced her. That’s not rape, even though in the story, the police told her that they were arresting her for rape. That’s so misleading!”

Nor Zabetha also called on Malaysians, especially drama producers, filmmakers and actors to wisen up to the law in order to make their films and dramas credible.

Nur 2, with 15 episodes, is the sequel to the popular drama series Nur, screened on TV3 last year.

Produced by Radius One and directed by Shahrulezad Mohameddin, it continues the story of Ustaz Adam and his wife Nur (Amyra Rosli), who was formerly a prostitute.

The couple run a religious school for youngsters which is popular in their village, and Nur soon befriends the mysterious Juita, who is also a prostitute.

Juita is obssessed with Ustaz Adam and her friendship with Nur is actually a tactic to get close to him.
