#Showbiz: 'Being a millionaire is not a measure of true success and happiness' - Afdlin

KUALA LUMPUR: It is unfair for one to judge others' success based on wealth and property alone, said multi-talented Datuk Afdlin Shauki yesterday.

In an Instagram post, the actor, comedian, director and producer said that people should avoid forcing others to become rich like millionaires, and use wealth as a measure of success.

Afdlin, 48, said: "Why are there people who sell nasi lemak by the roadside every day, but do not open their own restaurants? That's because they are happy with their stalls.

"Why do some people become doctors, working extra hard at odd hours, but are not paid handsomely? That's because they are passionate about their work, saving lives and healing the sick.

"And why do fishermen go out to sea, braving the storms? That's because it's the only job they've known and catching a lot of fish brings them joy.

"We should not force others to be rich. We should avoid being arrogant by insisting that everyone must be millionaires. We should avoid calling people who are happy being employees as “unsuccessful".

"We should not look down on small traders and full-time housewives, neither should we call them losers. Being a millionaire is not a measure of true success and happiness.

"Each person has a different definition of success and happiness. God made us with different backgrounds, strengths, needs, skills, talents and interests because we need each other in life."

Afdlin's words of wisdom earned praise from Netizens.

“Thank you Datuk. Lovely post. I sometimes feel like a loser being a full-time housewife but God knows best," said Liza.

“Well said Datuk. We should stop judging others by material wealth, it does not bring happiness to everyone," said Shahruddin.

“Terbaik! I am not rich, but I am happy with my job and thankful to God that I have a happy family and good friends," said Arissa.
