#Showbiz: Catch epic dance drama 'Ratu Kuning Langkasuka' at IB this weekend

KUALA LUMPUR: Istana Budaya will be staging the traditional dance drama Ratu Kuning Langkasuka at the prestigious venue's Panggung Sari, here from Sept 23 to 25.

The production will showcase the talents of Istana Budaya's choreographer and Artis Tari ensemble in translating the grand tale of heartbreak with accompanying music performed by the National Symphony Orchestra (OSK).

Directed by celebrated local theatre practitioner Sabera Shaik, the epic narrative revolves around a love triangle that involves the royal couple Ratu Kuning and the Yang Dipertuan Muda Johor with an alluring court dancer named Dang Sirat.

Sabera, has been producing numerous local theatre programmes since 1980 before forming Masakini Theatre Company in 2003.

Her solo performance and work in 2010, Lady Swettenham, which received critical acclaim internationally was followed by Puteri Saadong in 2015.

Both well-received productions directed by Tage Larsen (of Denmark's Teater Laboratorium) were staged in Penang, London, Denmark, Delhi, Pune, Jaipur, Mumbai, Brazil and South Africa.

The titular role of Ratu Kuning will be played by Dayang Norinah, who hails from Kota Belud, Sabah. A seasoned dancer and dance tutor, she currently runs Dayang Entertainment and a dance studio here.

Istana Budaya choreographer Rudy Dr Luna Jr will be taking on the role of The Raja Muda of Johor. Having been active in the dance and theatre scene since 1992, he has won the championship title in the dance and choreography category during the 2009 World Champions of Performing Arts (WCOPA) event in Los Angeles, USA.
