#Showbiz: Dark fantasy drama 'Nenek Bongkok Tiga' premieres on Viu

KUALA LUMPUR: Video streaming platform Viu kicked off its 2023 lineup with the premiere of drama series 'Nenek Bongkok Tiga' today.

The dark fantasy series helmed by award-winning director Datuk Yusry Abdul Halim is Viu's opening tentpole for the year and will be the first Viu Original series to have a road tour in Malaysia and Indonesia.

The cast — Hun Haqeem, Meerqeen, Sara Ali, Syafie Naswip, Syazwan Zulkifly, Ashraf Muslim, Fimie Don, Sara Mack Lubis, Rykarl Iskandar, Sherie Merlis and Datin Sofia Jane — will head to Kuantan tomorrow, Johor Baru on Feb 17 and Jakarta on March 8.

Viu Malaysia country manager Kingsley Warner said: "This series is a good start to 2023 for Malaysian Viu Original and builds on the momentum we have established after releasing five shows across different genres last year... 'Nenek Bongkok Tiga' is sure to be a treat for fans of dark fantasy.

"We believe that this series has cross-market potential due to the large fan base and popularity that the series' cast members have in Indonesia."

This series tells the story of eight people who have been kidnapped and held hostage at a mansion in the Bukit Luruh forest, which is notorious for missing people cases.

The mansion's sole occupant, Nenek, accuses the group of trespassing on the land of an entity known as Tuan Tanah.

To be released, those "kidnapped" must carry out a series of challenges.

Filming took place over 10 weeks in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perak and Johor.

The series features extensive green screen work, which was shot at Iskandar Malaysia Studios in Johor, and several ambitious sets built to create the surreal fantasy world of 'Nenek Bongkok Tiga'.

Two episodes of the dark fantasy thriller will premiere on Viu today, followed by a new episode every Thursday.

Viu-ers with a penchant for Malaysian dark fantasy can watch the series on the Viu app, which can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store, Google Play, Huawei App Gallery and on selected smart TVs, or watch online at www.viu.com.
