#Showbiz: Watch 5 movies for free at the 2023 Korean Film Festival

KUALA LUMPUR: Korean film fans are in for a treat during the 2023 Korean Film Festival which is set to take place at GSC Mid Valley, here from Nov 23 to 26.

Hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Malaysia, the four-day event is organised in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Look East Policy between Korea and Malaysia.

The film festival offers audiences the chance to enjoy five carefully curated Korean movies for free that represent the core values of Korean public diplomacy – Peace, Freedom, Solidarity and Prosperity.

Kicking it off on Nov 23 is The Front Line (2011), which delves into the historical events of the Korean War and portrays the valiant soldiers on the front lines battling fiercely until the conflict's final moments.

Then there's the documentary Granny Poetry Club (2019), that will be screened on Nov 24. It's about seven grandmothers excited about learning Korean at the age of 80.

Overcoming the challenges of late learning, especially during the Japanese colonial era when it was difficult for grandmothers to learn Hangul, these grandmothers come together to study Hangul and write poetry, spreading joy beyond the screen.

The animated film, Kai: The Legend of Mirror Lake (2016), reimagines Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale, The Snow Queen, and sets it in Central Asia.

In it, Kai, the village protector, strives to protect his home from the notorious ice witch Hatan.

Bori (2018) follows the story of a girl with deaf parents and brothers, who pretends to be deaf herself.

But she discovers that she is equally a beloved daughter to her parents, whether she can hear or not.

The two films will be screened on Nov 25. Moviegoers can catch Tunnel (2016) on Nov 26, which tells the story about saving a car salesman stuck in a collapsing tunnel.

All film screenings will be free and open to the public. Tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis and are currently redeemable via GSC e-payment (website and mobile app) or GSC ticketing kiosks at GSC Mid Valley.

Each person will be able to redeem two complimentary tickets. For more details, visit www.gsc.com.my.
