#Showbiz: Indie film 'Pendatang' should be shown in schools - Finas

KUALA LUMPUR: The independent film 'Pendatang' should be shown in schools, said the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) chairman Datuk Kamil Othman.

This, he said, could allow discussions and disassemble entrenched perceptions and biases.

"(Pendatang) Should be screened at schools to invite discussions, and dismantle deep-seated perceptions and prejudices.

"Small steps towards a desired destination," he wrote on his X page.

When asked further in the comments section by an X user whether the film screening would receive approval from the Film Censorship Board (LPF), Kamil said that it is not impossible.

"(I) can't speak on behalf of LPF but looking at the film objectively, some leeway might be possible," he replied.

The 'Pendatang' independent film is a dystopian thriller by Kuman Pictures set in a fictional version of Malaysia where different ethnic groups are not allowed to mix under oppressive laws.

The story revolves around a Chinese family who moves into their new home and discovers a Malay girl hiding there, putting them in a moral dilemma of whether to expel and endanger her or endanger themselves by smuggling her back into the Malay area.

The film has been published on YouTube as a way to avoid concerns regarding censorship.
