#Showbiz: Iman Fandi's musical streak

SHE'S got the best of both worlds from her beloved parents — taking on the beauty and grace of her South Africa-born former model mother Wendy Jacobs and the physicality and tenaciousness of her iconic Singaporean footballer father Fandi Ahmad.

"Growing up, I saw how my parents worked and that rubbed off on me," says Iman Fandi, who has been carving her career in the entertainment industry as a singer.

"My parents taught me to always be humble and respectful, but also to work hard to succeed."

MUSIC MATTERS

The only girl with four brothers who are all footballers as well, Iman started as a track-and-field athlete before becoming a model in her teens and deciding to pursue music.

"Football is obviously a big thing in my family but I was also exposed to a lot of music from a young age.

"There was always music at home from my brothers listening to songs on the TV or radio.

"In the car, my father would play his own music and my parents were fond of karaoke sessions," she says.

CREATIVE STREAK

The soft-spoken and introverted 23-year-old artiste adds that she has always had a creative streak in her.

"I was into fashion, writing and I would hum my own tunes, so it was a natural progression for me to be able to express myself creatively and now make a career out of it," she says.

SWINGING SINGLES

The singer-songwriter turned heads with her self-penned first single, 'Timeframe', in 2021 which got her signed to Universal Music Singapore.

The R&B track was followed by pop ditty 'Love Me Little More' and the rap number 'Top Bop'.

"I've always been interested in different genres and styles and I wanted my songs to be an exploration of different things," says Iman, who performed live in front of thousands of her compatriots during Singapore's National Day Parade last August.

ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES

Her latest single which was released recently is an upbeat and catchy tune called 'Baseball Bat'.

Featuring a more edgy image to go with a never-die attitude, she sings in the chorus lyrics: "When life sucks, make you feel so bad — hit it right back like a baseball bat."

The track unveils a concealed side of Iman — a silent rebel amid the glitz and glam of social media.

"Instead of hiding our anger or sadness, we should embrace it and understand that it's okay to fight back because sometimes, life just sucks," she says.

Iman adds that she wants people to know that it's okay to be down once in a while as long they roll with the punches and get over those bad days.

MORE MUSIC

She's currently working on more tracks this year with some exciting collaborations in the near future.

"2024 is going to be a busy but very interesting year for me. I'm currently working on my debut album which will be out sometime this year.

"I can't reveal much at this moment but I'm very excited about it so stay tuned," she says enthusiastically.
