#Showbiz: 'Underground' celebrates the best of indie rock [NSTTV]

ONE is named for general clumsiness, another for the rain and the third for sleepy folk.

Butterfingers which began in 1993, and Hujan and Bunkface — which both began in 2005 — are pioneers of Malaysia's independent rock scene that have a steady following among fans of music genre.

 THREE-HOUR CELEBRATION

Concert organiser Hitman Solutions has brought these three indie rock legends together for the first time for a three-hour gig to be held at the Surf Beach of Sunway Lagoon in Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya, beginning 8pm on March 2.

Simply titled 'Underground', the concert promises rock lovers lots of special moment, surprises and rearrangements of the three groups' greatest hits.

And better still, it has entered the Malaysia Book Of Records for the largest inflatable guitar replica (10m high) that will tower over the big stage.

 UNDERGROUND STYLE

Hitman founder Rohit Rampal said 'Underground' was a special treat of non-stop entertainment for "indie rock" lovers.

"The three bands will offer the best of their music, and also pay tribute to other notable acts from the independent rock music scene," said Rohit, adding that each band will perform for 45 minutes.

"The stage will be decorated with typical underground-style props to relive the early years of independent rock which is the late 1990s and the 2000s.

"These bands emerged in shops and garages. Minimalism was their backdrop and simplicity was their fashion statement."

Rohit added that they wanted to give fans a truly independent rock experience, with lots of interaction between the bands and their fans.

"They will sing each other's songs, as solo numbers or duets. Each act will perform an average of 10 songs."

 ROCKING TIME

Butterfingers' lead guitarist and keyboardist Khairul Ridzwan Anuar or Loque said that it was their first big stage reunion in a decade, and they were excited to share the stage with their old friends Hujan and Bunkface again.

"We last performed together on the stage of Istana Budaya in 2009. We're all looking forward to have a rocking good time," he said.

Butterfingers' last major concert 'Transcendence 20 Year Concert' took place in 2019 at Stadium Malawati in Shah Alam.

The group comprising lead singer and guitarist Emmett Roslan, Loque, bassist Fakharudin Bahar or Kadak and drummer Haffizal Rashid or Loko had 'Malayneum 23 Concert' at the same stadium in October last year.

They also rocked Stadium Likas, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah at the Borneo Rock Festival 2023 last Dec 30.

 NEW SINGLE

Bunkface lead singer Sam Baharom said that the concert coincided with the release of their new single 'Hilang'.

"It's going to be a celebration of everything Bunkface, and we're honoured to share the stage with some of the most enduring independent rock bands who are also our great friends," he said, adding that the group loved the "party" atmosphere of Sunway Lagoon.

Bunkface was formed in Klang in 2006 comprising vocalist and guitarist Sam, bassist Youk (Farouk Jaafar), guitarist Paan (Ahmad Farhan) and drummer Biak (Alif Sufian).

The name Bunkface was inspired by the Sum 41 song 'Crazy Amanda Bunkface'.

The band which released its first Malay single 'Situasi' in 2007 won the Ultimate Shout Award in the Shout Awards of 8TV in 2009.

Bunkface, which released its first studio album 'Phobia Phoney' in 2010, has Green Day, Fall Out Boy and The Offspring as their main influences.

 GREAT TIME

Hujan lead singer Noh Salleh said that he had not performed in Sunway Lagoon for ages and was excited to return to the popular resort.

"It's a place that is so chill and fun. I am very sure we will all have a great time that we will cherish forever," he said.

Hujan was formed in 2005 by vocalist Noh and lead guitarist AG Coco. They were also joined by drummer Azham Ahmad and bassist Izzat Uzaini.

They had their first self-titled studio album in 2008, and this was followed by four others including 'Mencari Konklusi' (2009) and 'Jika Sempat' (2016).
