#Showbiz: Edith Piaf's timeless songs to reverberate through Singapore

KUALA LUMPUR: Widely regarded as France's greatest singer of the 20th century, Edith Piaf is a legend.

Her life and music is celebrated in Piaf! The Show as part of the on-going Voilah! France Singapore Festival, and is a musical masterpiece with more than 400 worldwide performances and over a million tickets sold across 50 countries.

Piaf! will be staged at 8pm on May 10 and 11 at the Mediacorp Theatre, Singapore.

Renowned for her deep, emotive rendition of unforgettable melodies, the legendary singer lives on through her music, her inspiring life, her stage presence and her indomitable spirit.

Piaf! is inspired by the award-winning movie, La Vie En Rose and features Nathalie Lermitte, a French singer hailed as Piaf's legitimate musical heiress.

Lermitte will bring alive the spirit of the legendary singer in a mesmerising performance bound to captivate international fans.

Conceived and directed by Gil Marsalla, Piaf! is a captivating tribute unanimously praised by Piaf's inner circle as the most beautiful tribute on the legendary singer's life and career.

The show illustrates the magic of Piaf's life through her timeless songs and never-before-seen images curated as a mesmerising two-part musical journey.

Piaf! has been the biggest French musical since 2015.

In 2017, Piaf! opened to sold out audiences at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Olympia in Paris.

Remembered by the world for her signature song La Vie En Rose in 1945, Piaf entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.

Piaf! is presented by LOL Asia Singapore in partnership with the Voilah! France Singapore Festival.

Accompanied by a stellar quartet of Parisian musicians, the performance aims to transport spectators to the streets of Paris, where Piaf's voice once echoed through the cafes and cabarets of Montmartre.

The first part of the show will give audiences a feel of the legendary bohemian district of Montmartre, where music and art met hedonistic living.

Through soul-stirring performances of classics such as La Vie En Rose, Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien, Hymne A Lamour and Milord, the second part of the performance features Piaf in her post-war glory days, harkening a call back to Europe's days of grand concerts and bustling nightlife.

Marsalla said in a statement yesterday that Piaf's songs were pearls of 20th century music.

"Our aim is to bring French music and the personality of Piaf closer to the younger generation. To the older generation, we would like them to reminisce about the Little Sparrow," he said.

LOL Asia chief executive officer Rizal Kamal said: "Piaf's music transcends time and borders, touching the hearts of audiences around the world. We are honoured to have this opportunity to showcase her legendary repertoire to Singapore, and allow audiences to immerse themselves in the beauty and raw poignancy of her songs."
