The race of PJ

One of the country’s oldest running events returns next month, promising improved organisation and elevation challenges, writes Syida Lizta Amirul Ihsan

BEFORE running became a mass social pastime, the Petaling Jaya Half Marathon, which started 31 years ago, was established for those who liked running. Over the years, it became a must-participate annual event for runners.

Some took part because it was near where they lived, others grew in strength (and in distance) with the race, year after year, going from fun run to the 21km distance. Some veterans, I was told, have medals from this event that they cherish.

The run, organised by the Petaling Jaya City Council, is not ambitious in distance. It retains the 21km distance as its longest race but over the years, the organisation has improved and it attracts more runners. Last year, as a commemorative gesture to Petaling Jaya celebrating 30 years of being a city, it offered a 30km distance and that sold out the fastest.

“We were all very surprised,” says race director Zainudin Lot, whose company, Puncak Ventures SRA, is trusted with organising the event. “But I suppose it makes sense. Not many events offer that distance and it provides the perfect training run for those preparing for a 42km full marathon.

“Having an organised run that you can use as a training ground takes the headache away from doing one on your own,” says the seasoned runner and hiker.

BACK AGAIN

Next, month, the 31st edition of this race continues with 30km being the farthest route because it was so popular last year.

“This year, the slot sold out within a few weeks,” says Zainudin.

“Of course, with the distance being the longest — and the logistics challenge that comes with it — it has the smallest allocation or racers for the entire event,” he says.

Zainudin, known in the running industry as Deeno, says running events have become social and meeting points and there are so many events happening simultaneously every weekend. “There are morning runs, night runs, music runs, colour runs, costume runs, runs for charity… you name it.

“While I welcome the flourishing side of this industry, I think there are still no shortcuts in organising a good run that will get the nod from both the event title holder and the participants.

“We want to make the PJ Half Marathon relevant for this era, since we are seeing a flood of events. We are also looking at more participation from runners from other states and countries,” he says.

MORE ON BOARD

Zainudin also says as the event gains prestige and momentum, it hopes to receive more sponsorship so companies can use the event as their branding platform. “We want this to be a prime event with history and prestige, but with an updated concept and organisation.”

His company is also aiming for better traffic control this year.

“We’re looking at zero hiccups because the safety of all runners is our top priority. No matter what the cost, the team will ensure every runner’s safety is not compromised.

“We will also up our game when it comes to cheaters and we will catch them and take action. We won’t allow a few to tarnish the reputation of the race and also the running community.”
