#HEALTH: Preparing for a mammogram

BREAST cancer is the most common cancer among Malaysian women. Early detection is crucial and a mammogram is one of the most effective means to screen for breast cancer.

However, many women still have misconceptions about this procedure and shy away from undergoing it.

In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Prince Court Medical Centre consultant radiologist Dr Sumithra S. Ranganathan answers some common queries about this breast cancer screening method.

BEST TIME FOR A MAMMOGRAM

According to Malaysian standards, a baseline mammogram is recommended when someone reaches the age of 40. For women who are still menstruating, the best time to undergo the procedure is after their period.

WHAT TO WEAR

The best outfit to wear when coming for a mammogram is a two-piece outfit (like pants and shirt/blouse or skirt and blouse) as you will be asked to remove your top and bra for the examination.

Please avoid deodorant or lotions as this might affect the mammogram screening process and cause a false positive result.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

Depending on whether it's a 2D mammogram or a 3D mammogram, it can take between five and 10 minutes to do an examination, with the 3D mammogram taking approximately 10 minutes.

IS IT PAINFUL?

It is uncomfortable, but not painful if you relax and let the radiographer do what is needed. And of course, do it a week after your period if you are menstruating.

HOW SOON WILL I GET RESULTS?

Approximately half an hour to an hour, depending on how busy the department is.
