#HEALTH: Medical education platform for general practitioners

UM Specialist Centre (UMSC) recently concluded its inaugural CME GP Symposium 2023: Multidisciplinary Quaternary Care Symposium Integrating Innovations in Cardiovascular, Endocrine, Renal, and Gastrointestinal Health.

The symposium serves as a continuing medical education platform for general practitioners (GPs) in Malaysia and the selected topics are tailored to meet the demands and preferences of general practitioners, focusing on the most sought-after and relevant treatments in the field.

The GPs at the symposium received insights directly from distinguished professors, ensuring a leveraged and authoritative understanding of the subject matter.

Experts in cardiovascular, endocrine, renal, and gastrointestinal health shared insights into latest developments in their respective fields.

UMSC chief executive officer Norzaiton Senusi, says primary care practitioners stand as the initial point of contact for patients seeking healthcare in the country.

"They play a pivotal role in primary care," she adds but given that the industry is constantly changing, healthcare professionals must also adapt and grow to meet these new demands.

UMSC medical director Profesor Datuk Dr Hari Chandran adds that it's important for medical professionals to come together and share knowledge and stay updated with current developments.

"GPs are the stalwarts of the medical fraternity and they need the necessary support," he says and continuous medical education is vital.

During the symposium, Professor Datuk Paduka Dr Wan Azman Wan Ahmad, consultant cardiologist at UMSC, explored the mechanisms, management, and future directions in addressing hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis, while UMSC cardiothoracic surgeon Associate Professor Dr Sivakumar Krishnasamy, enlightened the audience on the current management of aortic pathologies and Uniportal VATS in thoracic surgery.

Professor Dr Lim Soo Kun, a nephrologist at UMSC, shared best practices in nephrology care, with a specific focus on navigating the complexities of diabetes and renal impairment.
