Hari Raya Haji was recently celebrated around the nation. Ewe PaikLeong lists five notable mosques in Negri Sembilan

1. MASJID HUSSAIN, PERSIARAN S2 D8, SEREMBAN 2

White symbolises the purity of Islam while twin minarets divided into five sections, the Five Principles of Islam. These are the hallmarks of Masjid Hussain. The dome rests onasquare base and its tholodate is fitted with rectangular windows. Three sides of the square base are flanked with half domes — three on each side.

Inside the prayer hall, lancet-shaped windows rise from the floor to the ceiling. Built in 2012 at a cost of RM23 million, the mosque can accommodate 3,000worshippers at any one time.

2. NEGRI SEMBILAN STATE MOSQUE, JALAN DATO HAMZAH, SEREMBAN

The roof of this mosque is an enneagon, with nine conoid sections. Topped with a crescent moon and a star, a pillar stands at every corner of the concrete roof. They represent the state’s nine districts. The prayer hall is ringed by a first-level terrace which adjoins platforms protruding beyond the roof.

The hexagonal roof of the ablution house replicates the design of the mosque’s roof. Standing on nine curved concrete legs, the minaret stabs the sky at 25 metres high.

3. MASJID KARIAH TUANKU JAFAAR, JALAN TUANKU JAFAAR BARAT, RANTAU

Built in 1994, this mosque is crowned with a golden dome. The front verandah is supported by 10 semi-circular arches. There are two separate minarets which are topped with helm roofs. Three thousand worshippers can be housed in this mosque. Topiary plants in its compound inject an atmosphere of serenity. The imams of the mosque are Ebni Hajal Ramli and Madah Ilong.

4. MASJID LAMA, KAMPUNG BAHASA KAPOR, PORT DICKSON

Sitting on a piece of elevated ground, this mosque has a three-tiered roof, and its front porch is topped with a small golden dome.

A Melaka-style stone staircase leads to the front porch. Surprisingly, the roof is supported by concrete pillars with horseshoe-shaped arches adorned with gilded

arabesque designs.

The prayer hall is covered with a blue carpet, complemented by curtains of the same colour.

5. MASJID KARIAH TELUK KEMANG, JALAN KEMANG 9, PORT DICKSON

Its imposing blue hip roof makes it resemble a pyramid. The roof even extends beyond the verandah of the building and

is topped with a dome resting on a square base outfitted with semi-circularwindows. Four massive octagonal pillars in the prayer hall support the roof.

In the prayer hall, there are panels of Islamic calligraphy on its walls. The separate tapering minaret has two circularbalconies and is crowned with a helm roof. This mosque was built in 1994 and renovated in 2004 and 2009.
