Sphynx cat the talk of the town at Kuantan Fun Cat Show

KUANTAN: A cat owner Mohd Yusri Shaari is accustomed to accusation that he’s abusing his cat by shaving its fur, and it’s all because his cat looks nothing like an ordinary feline that’s fluffy and furry.

Mohd Yusri, 38, is actually a proud owner of a Sphynx cat, a breed of cat known for its lack of coat (fur), and it always raises an eyebrow every time he brings it to a competition.

The uniqueness of his cat which he named 'Alam', however, attracted the attention of the public in the Kuantan Fun Cat Show here today, although some visitors were reluctant to hold the cat.

“Actually, this cat is just like any other cats, it’s just he doesn’t have fur and his body temperature is a bit warmer than ordinary cats.

“In terms of care and food, it’s actually not difficult. He’s actually very friendly with me,” Mohd Yusri said when met at the show.

Other than ‘Alam’, he also brought a Sphynx kitten and two Bengal cats for a competition organised by Terengganu Cat Lovers Club.

Mohd Yusri had travelled from Tampin, Negri Sembilan with his cats, which he claimed was not a big deal, to come here for the competition.

The competition saw 50 participants who even came from outside Pahang, including Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

The event organiser, Nik Irwan Nik Mohamad said the competition would be held in seven locations nationwide, with Kuantan being the first location.

“We received encouraging participations from cat lovers, some even came from afar to join,” he said.

Nik Irwan added that there are certain rules for the competition, including the minimum age of the cats which must be at least four months old, and the cats must also be vaccinated at least twice to ensure the safety and health of other cats.
