SMART PARENTING: Family: Uninterrupted!

JUST like that, the year-end school holiday is almost coming to an end. I hope you and your loved ones had managed to squeeze in some time to enjoy the break together. For those who haven’t had the chance, it’s not too late.

Let’s utilise your leave entitlement for the sake of the family. A good boss would understand and support our wishes. He/she would know that a disgruntled employee isn’t an asset; in fact, he can be a liability and threat to the organisation.

If you’re the boss, please ensure that everyone takes a good break to spend the time with their families. Work will never end but the children are growing too fast. While they’re on their break, do refrain from sending them work-related messages. A happy employee makes for happier outcomes.

Some may complain that it’s getting more expensive to take the family out these days. That may be true, but only partially, because not everything costs a lot of money. If we look hard enough, there are still plenty of family activities that don’t have to cost the earth – and they carry a huge rate of return.

SIMPLE IDEAS, HUGE FUN

An example would be the local museum. When was the last time you brought the family there? You may not have noticed a lot of changes, but the children will see it differently. I recall an incident when I brought my family to the Malacca Heritage Area for the second time a few years after the first visit. One of my kids pointed out to the A’Famosa building and confidently said: “When did they put it there? It wasn’t there the last time!” We certainly had a good chuckle about that.

If you’re more inclined towards activity-based outings, your list can include things like volunteering at local places of worship, orphanages or elderly care centres. Even at home, the kids can be engaged in low cost activities such as games nights, movie nights, storytelling sessions or home DIY projects like decorating, baking and cooking.

The activities may vary but they have one thing in common: They provide endless hours of fun while capturing great family moments together. It’s not too late. Let’s make the next two weeks count by taking a well-deserved break and rediscovering the beauty of our family, uninterrupted!
